Pity the poor speech writer. Stuck in some lonely, out of the way office and left only with the internet, some books and his own thoughts. Forced to turn out work for the betterment of elected officials and the education of his fellow man.
Has anyone ever heard someone get up to the podium and say, “I’d like to thank the guy who wrote this, because I don’t have a clue, what I’m talking about.” Probably not. It’s not a job that gets much recognition, in fact, if you love to be recognized then you shouldn’t be a speech writer. Honestly, I enjoy what I do.
My career requires good writing skills, the love of search, the ability to be alone for long periods yet connect with audiences both big and small on a personal level. The end of the last sentence was oxymoronic, which is not a word but helps with this story.
There are of course side effects.
Lots and lots of material never sees the light of day. Clever turns of phrase, witticisms, insults, etc, just can’t be put into a politician’s speech. Not that I haven’t tried but they are edited out by my bosses long before the speech hits the hands of an elected official.
What therefore is the scribe to do? Random Scribblings. Things that I write for my own amusement, things that are educational, observations, bits and pieces of random idiocy all come here.
Hope you enjoy!
